The present invention relates to an electronic device for wireless local area network (WLAN) communication with a plurality of external devices, which provides WLAN communication on the basis of communication performance required by a second external device while performing WLAN communication with a first external device, and an operation method thereof. According to various embodiments of the present invention, the electronic device comprises a WLAN communication circuit supporting a plurality of frequency bands and at least one processor operatively connected to the WLAN communication circuit. The at least one processor is configured to perform WLAN communication with a first Access point (AP) through a first channel in a first frequency band; when an external device for performing direct communication based on WLAN is detected during WLAN communication with the first AP, check a function of the external device and/or WLAN connection information of the external device; switch the WLAN communication with the first AP to WLAN communication with a second AP based on a second channel in a second frequency band different from the first frequency band on the basis of the function of the external device and/or the WLAN connection information of the external device; and perform direct communication with the external device through the second channel in the second frequency band.
