The present invention relates to: a health functional food composition for preventing or improving obesity containing a Milyang No. 20 sorghum extract as an active ingredient; a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating obesity; a feed composition for preventing or improving obesity; and a method for preventing or treating obesity comprising a step of administering the composition to an entity other than a human. The present invention provides a composition containing a Milyang No. 20 sorghum extract as an active ingredient, that inhibits the differentiation of preadipocytes into adipocytes, suppresses the expression of genes (C/EBPα and FABP4) related to the differentiation process of adipocytes, and has excellent activity compared with other sorghum varieties as a result of calculating the required amount of necessary seed to have excellent anti-obesity activity, thereby being usefully used in preventing and treating obesity. 본 발명은 밀양20호 수수 추출물을 유효성분으로 포함하는 비만 예방 또는 개선용 건강기능식품 조성물, 비만 예방 또는 치료용 약학 조성물 및 비만 예방 또는 개선용 사료 조성물; 및 상기 조성물을 인간을 제외한 개체에 투여하는 단계를 포함하는 비만 예방 또는 치료방법에 관한 것이다. 본 발명은 밀양20호 수수 추출물을 유효성분으로 포함하는 조성물은 지방전구세포의 지방세포로의 분화를 억제하고, 지방세포의 분화과정과 관련된 유전자(C/EBPα 및 FABP4) 발현을 억제하며, 필요 종자 소요량을 계산한 결과 타 수수 품종에 비하여 활성이 우수하여, 항비만 활성이 우수한 것인바, 비만 예방 및 치료에 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.
