The present invention relates to a laundry treating apparatus and a control method thereof. The method for controlling the laundry treating apparatus according to embodiments may comprise the following steps of: injecting a washing water into a tub of the laundry treating apparatus; checking first turbidity information of the washing water after the washing water is introduced into the tub; confirming a type of a detergent based on the confirmed first turbidity information; and controlling a washing cycle according to the type of the detergent.
