According to various embodiments of the disclosure, an electronic device comprises: a display; a fingerprint sensor which is placed on one surface of the display; a memory which stores a plurality of fingerprint images mapped with information representing a plurality of guidelines; and a processor which is operatively connected to the display, the fingerprint sensor, and the memory. The processor may be set to: when an input signal requiring fingerprint authentication is detected, use the display to display a first UI representing a fingerprint recognition area and a guideline corresponding to a fingerprint image, having a higher quality value among a plurality of fingerprint images stored in the memory, as a second UI; when a finger of a user contacts the fingerprint recognition area, use the fingerprint sensor to obtain a fingerprint image of the finger; compare the obtained fingerprint image with a fingerprint image mapped with information representing the first UI and/or the second UI; and when the fingerprint images match, based on the comparison result, perform the fingerprint authentication. In addition to various embodiments disclosed in the document, other various embodiments may be provided.
