The present invention relates to a composition for preventing, treating, or alleviating arthritis, comprising Elaeocarpus sylvestris extract or a mixture of Elaeocarpus sylvestris extract and sulfasalazine as active ingredients. The Elaeocarpus sylvestris extract according to the present invention inhibits nitric oxide production, inhibits inflammatory cytokines, inhibits iNOS or COX-2 production, inhibits NF-κB or IκBα activity, inhibits aggrecan expression, reduces arthritis index, or inhibits foot edema activation, and in particular, the mixture of Elaeocarpus sylvestris extract and sulfasalazine has excellent effect in inhibiting nitric oxide production, inhibiting inflammatory cytokines, inhibiting iNOS or COX-2 production, inhibiting NF-κB or IκBα activity, reducing arthritis index, or inhibiting foot edema activation, compared to treatment with sulfasalazine alone.
