A data storage device comprises a memory device and a controller connected to the memory device. The controller is configured to receive a command which directs data to be written in the memory device from, for example, a host device, perform toggle mode ™ encoding for the data, and transmit the TM encoded data to the memory device. The memory device is configured to receive the TM-encoded data, decode the TM-encoded data, and write the decoded data to a location within the memory device. The memory device is additionally configured to receive a reading command which directs reading data from the location within the memory device, read the data, perform TM encoding of the data, and transmit the TM-encoded data to the controller.
