The present invention provides a method for controlling a clothes treating apparatus that comprises a clothes treating chamber accommodating clothes, a steam generator for generating steam supplied to the clothes treating chamber, a valve provided on a drainage way connected to the steam generator, and a drain tank connected to the drainage way. The method comprises a step of opening the valve before starting an operating course of the clothes treating apparatus to guide residual water in the steam generator to the drain tank, wherein the steam generator is provided at a higher position than the drain tank.
