The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for updating map information. The apparatus according to the present invention comprises: a vehicle information detection part that detects information of surrounding vehicles accompanying a vehicle when driving at an intersection; a lane analysis part configured to analyze lane information based on information of surrounding vehicles accompanying the vehicle; a reliability determination part for determining the reliability of the lane information; and a control part for extracting a change point on the map based on the reliability and updating map information based on the change point, thereby capable of providing accurate maps, and also updating map information at low cost without using an expensive mobile mapping system (MMS). 본 발명은 지도 정보 업데이트 장치 및 방법에 관한 것으로서, 본 발명에 따른 장치는, 교차로 주행 시 차량과 동행하는 주변 차량의 정보를 검출하는 차량 정보 검출부, 상기 차량과 동행하는 주변 차량의 정보에 기초하여 차선 정보를 분석하는 차선 분석부, 상기 차선 정보의 신뢰도를 판단하는 신뢰도 판단부, 및 상기 신뢰도에 근거하여 지도 상의 변경점을 추출하고, 상기 변경점을 기준으로 지도 정보를 업데이트하는 제어부를 포함한다.
