The present invention relates to a method of controlling a backlight unit of a liquid crystal display. According to the present invention, provided are an excessive backlight dimming device and method, wherein excessive dimming of a backlight is performed according to the sensitivity of the brightness perceived by humans rather than the numerical brightness of the image, and thus it is possible to reduce power consumption by reducing the brightness of the backlight while minimizing deterioration in image quality perceived by humans. 본 발명은 액정 디스플레이의 백라이트 유닛 제어에 관한 것으로, 본 발명에 따른 백라이트 과도 디밍 장치 및 방법은 이미지의 수치적인 밝기가 아니라 사람이 인식하는 밝기의 민감도에 따라 백라이트의 과도한(Excessive) 디밍을 수행함으로써 사람이 인식하는 화질의 저하는 최소화하면서도 백라이트의 밝기를 줄여 소비전력을 줄일 수 있는 효과가 있다.
