The present invention relates to a composition for preventing or treating obesity and arteriosclerosis comprising an extract of Rhus chinensis as an active component, wherein the extract of Rhus chinensis extracted with water, an organic solvent, or a mixed solvent thereof regulates the expression of genes involved in lipid accumulation and lipid metabolism, suppresses the increase in the size of body fat caused by a high-fat diet, suppresses increase in blood cholesterol and triglycerides, and regulates the expression of genes related to arteriosclerosis, such as cell adhesion substances and apolipoprotein, in vascular smooth muscle cells, so that it is possible to be used as a very effective pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating obesity, hyperlipidemia, and arteriosclerosis related to the same. 본 발명은 오배자 추출물을 유효성분으로 포함하는 비만, 동맥경화 예방 또는 치료용 조성물에 관한 것으로, 오배자는 물, 유기용매 또는 이의 혼합용매로 추출한 오배자 추출물은 지방전구세포에서 지질 축적 및 지질 대사에 관여하는 유전자의 발현을 조절하고, 고지방식이에 의한 체지방의 크기 증가를 억제하고 혈중 콜레스테롤 및 중성지방 증가를 억제하며, 혈관평활근세포에서 세포부착물질 및 아포지방단백 등 동맥경화와 관련되는 유전자의 발현을 조절할 수 있으므로, 이와 관련되는 비만, 고지혈증 및 동맥경화의 예방 또는 치료에 매우 유효한 약할 조성물로 사용될 수 있다.
