The present invention aims to normally perform preliminary discharge after cleaning treatment. The present invention provides a recording apparatus comprising: a recording head including a discharge element for discharging liquid; a circulation unit configured to perform circulation operation for circulating the liquid in a circulation route including the recording head; a cleaning mechanism for performing cleaning treatment for the recording head; and a preliminary discharge unit configured to perform preliminary discharge operation for preliminarily discharging the liquid from the discharge element.
