물질 검출 시스템(1)은 물질 센서(2)와, 펌프(3)를 구비한다. 물질 센서(2)는 제 1 공간(10)에 마련되며, 대상 물질(M)을 검출한다. 펌프(3)는 제 2 공간(20)의 기체를 제 1 공간(10)에 공급한다. 제 1 공간(10) 및 제 2 공간(20) 중 적어도 하나에 대상 물질(M)이 존재하는 경우에, 제 1 공간(10)과 제 2 공간(20)에서는 대상 물질(M)의 농도가 상이하다. 펌프(3)는, 제 2 공간(20)에 존재하는 기체를 제 1 공간(10)에 간헐적으로 공급한다.
