The present invention relates to a water heating apparatus and a control method thereof. The water heating apparatus according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises: a sensor for detecting a flow rate flowing into the water heating apparatus; and a control unit which determines whether the water heating apparatus and a storage tank are connected based on the flow rate introduced for a preset time. Accordingly, based on the flow rate flowing into the water heating apparatus, it is determined whether the water heating apparatus and the storage tank are connected, and an operation mode of the water heating apparatus is determined according to a determination result. As a result, active operation is possible even if a user incorrectly sets an operation mode of the water heating apparatus. An object of the present invention is to provide the water heating apparatus for determining the operation mode of the water heating apparatus and the control method thereof. 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 물 가열 장치는 물 가열 장치로 유입되는 유량을 감지하는 센서 및 기 설정된 시간 동안 유입된 유량을 기반으로 물 가열 장치와 저장탱크의 연결여부를 판단하는 제어부를 포함하여, 물 가열 장치로 유입된 유량을 기반으로, 물 가열 장치와 저장탱크의 연결여부를 판단하고, 판단 결과에 따라 물 가열 장치의 동작 모드를 결정하여, 사용자가 물 가열 장치의 동작 모드를 잘못 설정하더라도 능동적으로 동작시킬 수 있다.
