The present invention is to provide an apparatus and method for inspecting a surface material of a steel sheet that can accurately and quickly inspect the material of a steel sheet through an eddy current. According to an embodiment of the present invention, provided is a steel sheet surface material inspection apparatus for generating an eddy current in a steel sheet to determine the surface material of the steel sheet. The steel sheet surface material inspection apparatus comprises: an eddy current checker which faces the steel sheet; and a frame to which the eddy current checker is fixed. The eddy current checker includes: a coil unit arranged to form an alternating magnetic field in only one direction; an alternating current (AC) power supply unit connected to the coil unit; a sensor unit connected to the coil unit; and a material determination unit connected to the sensor unit and configured to determine a material of the steel sheet through a measurement signal obtained through the sensor unit. 본 발명은 와전류를 통하여 강판의 재질을 정확하며 신속하게 검사할 수 있는 강판 표면 재질 검사 장치 및 방법을 제공하는 것으로, 일 실시예에서 강판에 와전류를 발생시켜 강판의 표면 재질을 판단하는 강판 표면 재질 검사 장치로, 강판를 향하며 배치되는 와전류 검사기; 및 상기 와전류 검사기가 고정되는 프레임;을 포함하며, 상기 와전류 검사기는 일방향으로만 교류 자계를 형성하게 배치되는 코일부; 상기 코일에 연결된 교류 전원부; 상기 코일에 연결된 센서부; 및 상기 센서부에 연결되며, 상기 센서부를 통하여 얻어진 측정 신호를 통하여 강판의 재질을 판단하는 재질 판단부;를 포함하는강판 표면 재질 검사 장치를 제공한다.
