A method of performing electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in an electron microscope comprises: a step of providing a specimen on a specimen holder; a step of generating a beam of electrons from a source; a step of using an illuminator to direct the beam to emit the beam to the specimen; and a step of using an imaging system to receive a flux of electrons transmitted through the specimen and direct the flux onto a spectroscopic apparatus including a dispersion device to disperse the flux in a dispersion direction to form an EELS spectrum, and a detector including a detection surface sub-divided into a plurality of detection zones.
