The present invention relates to a serial communication apparatus and a method thereof and, more particularly, to a serial communication apparatus and a method thereof capable of communicating with a plurality of apparatuses having different communication standards through a single serial port. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the serial communication apparatus includes: a message generating unit for referring to communication information stored in a database and generating a search message corresponding to the communication information; a message transceiving unit for transmitting the generated search message to a plurality of external devices through one serial port and receiving a first response message for the search message from at least one of the plurality of external devices via the serial port; and a control unit for grasping identification information of a device corresponding to the communication information among the plurality of external devices based on the received first response message. The message generating unit generates a control message by configuring control data of a process corresponding to the grasped identification information based on the communication information and the message transceiving unit transmits the generated control message via the serial port to the external device in which the identification information has been grasped among the plurality of external devices. 본 발명은 시리얼 통신 장치 및 방법에 관한 것으로, 보다 상세하게는 하나의 시리얼 포트를 통해 통신 규격이 다른 복수의 장치와 통신할 수 있는 시리얼 통신 장치 및 방법에 관한 것이다. 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 시리얼 통신 장치는 데이터베이스에 저장된 통신정보를 참조하여 상기 통신정보에 대응하는 탐색 메시지를 생성하는 메시지 생성부, 상기 생성된 탐색 메시지를 하나의 시리얼 포트를 통해 복수의 외부 장치에 송신하고, 상기 시리얼 포트를 통해 상기 복수의 외부 장치 중 적어도 하나로부터 상기 탐색 메시지에 대한 제1 응답 메시지를 수신하는 메시지 송수신부 및 상기 수신된 제1 응답 메시지에 기초하여 상기 복수의 외부 장치 중 상기 통신정보에 대응하는 장치의 식별정보를 파악하는 제어부를 포함하고, 상기 메시지 생성부는 상기 파악된 식별정보에 대응하는 프로세스의 제어 데이터를 상기 통신정보에 따라 구성하여 제어 메시지를 생성하고, 상기 메시지 송수신부는 상기 생성된 제어 메시지를 상기 시리얼 포트를 통해 상기 복수의 외부 장치 중 상기 식별정보가 파악된 외부 장치에 송신하는 것을 특징으로 한다.
