Provided is a method for displaying a three-dimensional (3D) image by a device. The method comprises the steps of: transmitting information about a viewport of the device to a server; receiving, from the server, data on at least one second area corresponding to the viewport among a plurality of areas of a packed two-dimensional (2D) image; and displaying a 3D image based on the received data, wherein the packed 2D image is generated by modifying or relocating at least a portion of the plurality of areas of the 2D image which is projected from the 3D image, and the at least one second area is identified based on information on a relationship between an index of each of at least one first area corresponding to the viewport from among a plurality of areas of the 3D image, an index of each of the plurality of areas of the 3D image, and an index of each of the plurality of areas of the packed 2D image.
