A system provides haptic surround functionality. The system determines the position of a virtual event within a virtual environment. The system also determines the position of a first virtual body region of a virtual user within the virtual environment based on the position of the first body region of a user. The first body region corresponds to the first virtual body region. The system then determines a first haptic effect based on the virtual event, the position of the virtual event within the virtual environment, and the position of the first virtual body region of the virtual user within the virtual environment.
