A backlight unit formed in a display device includes a power converter which responds to a power control signal and generates a light source power voltage, a first node, a second node, at least one light emitting diode string which is connected between the first node and the second node and receives the light source power voltage though the first node, and a controller which is connected to the second node. The controller responds to a dimming signal and outputs a power control signal for controlling a current flowing along the light emitting diode string. When the dimming signal is a first level, a power control signal is outputted to turn off the power converter.
