The present invention relates to an apparatus for acquiring an image for iris recognition using face component distance and a method thereof. The apparatus of the present invention includes: a buffer which photographs a person image of more than one object with a camera in order to acquire an image for iris recognition and stores the photographed person image; a face component distance calculation part which calculates the face component distance from the person image stored in the buffer; an actual distance estimation part which estimates actual distance between the object and the camera from the face component distance calculated in the face component distance calculation part, and checks that the object exists in an iris photographing space from the estimated distance; and an iris image acquisition part which acquires a child image from the person image of the object who is checked to exist in the iris photographing space from the actual distance estimation part, and acquires an image for iris recognition satisfying standard of quality by measuring the quality of the acquired child image. 본 발명은 홍채인식용 이미지를 획득하기 위하여 하나 이상의 피촬영자의 인물이미지를 카메라로 촬영하여 저장하는 버퍼, 상기 버퍼에 저장된 인물이미지로부터 얼굴 구성요소 거리를 연산하는 얼굴 구성요소거리 연산부, 상기 얼굴 구성요소거리 연산부에서 계산된 얼굴 구성요소 거리로부터 피촬영자와 카메라 간의 실제 거리를 추정하고, 추정한 거리로부터 피촬영자가 홍채촬영공간에 있음을 확인하는 실제거리 추정부, 상기 실제거리 추정부에서 홍채촬영공간에 있음을 확인한 피촬영자의 인물이미지로부터 아이이미지를 획득하고, 획득한 아이이미지의 품질을 측정하여 기준품질도를 충족하는 홍채인식용 이미지를 획득하는 홍채이미지 획득부를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 얼굴 구성요소 거리를 이용한 홍채인식용 이미지 획득 장치 및 방법에 관한 것이다.
