The friction stir welding apparatus (202) comprises a spindle housing (204); and a pin tool (206) which is coaxial to a shaft (208), and rotatable from the spindle housing (204) around the shaft (208). The friction stir welding apparatus (202) also comprises a first shoulder (210) substantially not rotatable for the spindle housing (204) around the shaft (208).
