Summary:A method and an apparatus for upgrading a plug-in based on an IM application. The method includes obtaining basic elements of an IM application with a version called by a plug-in to be upgraded to the IM application. A client is scanned to obtain basic elements of an IM application in the client. The method also includes comparing, according to a type of a basic element, the basic elements of the IM application with the version called by the plug-in to be upgraded with the basic elements of the IM application in the client. A client matching the basic elements of the IM application with the version called by the plug-in to be upgraded is determined. The plug-in to be upgraded is released to the matched client.
