For performing visual search of encoded media, which is encoded as a plurality of alternative streams, stored in separate container files and used during normal playback, and a trick play stream, a playback device:requests, via HTTP byte range requests, portions of video from the alternative streams and buffers them, where each of the container files comprises a plurality of elements each of which contains a portion of encoded video that commences with an intra frame starting a GOP, and an index;decodes the buffered portions of video;receives a user instruction for performing a visual search of the media;requests, buffers, and decodes portions of the trick play stream.The container file that contains the trick play stream contains an index and frames of video encoded as intra frames, and entries in the index of the trick play stream container file comprise locations of each frame in the container file
