Summary:PURPOSE: An image sensor and a hold mode sensing method thereof are provided to prevent a vibration of a mouse by accurately detecting whether a hold mode starts in the image sensor of 1-bit output mode or not. CONSTITUTION: A hold mode determining unit (380) determines a hold mode by a comparison between the calculated number of 1 or 0 and a fixed threshold value by deducting the number of 1 or 0 which is calculated by a comparison with a low reference voltage level from the number of 1 or 0 which is calculated by a comparison with a high reference voltage level among image data which are outputted from a differential comparison unit (350). The differential comparison unit outputs image data of 1-bit by a comparison between a central reference voltage and an error value which is calculated from an adjacent pixel comparison unit (340). An effective image determining unit (370) determines whether the outputted image data is distributed within an effective area which is determined in advance or not. In case the image data is not an effective image, a differential reference voltage controller (360) controls the central reference voltage.
