Summary:PURPOSE: A method and a device for recognizing a distance to an object using a stereo camera are provided to measure a distance to a moving object by using offset values of left and right images of three-dimensional images. CONSTITUTION: A method and a device for recognizing a distance to an object using a stereo camera includes a stereo camera (310), an image separation unit (320), an image difference calculation unit (330), a matching region extraction unit (340), a normalization matching region forming unit (350), an offset value calculating unit (360), and a distance recognizing unit (370). The stereo camera photographs three-dimensional images of an object. The image separation unit separates the three-dimensional images photographed by using the stereo camera into left and right images. The image difference calculating unit calculates image differences indicating the difference between a current frame and a prior frame in respect to each of the left and right images. The matching region extraction unit searches object regions of the image differences of the left and right images so that left and right matching regions respectively corresponding to the left and right object regions are extracted from a plurality of candidate matching regions. [Reference numerals] (310) Stereo camera; (320) Image separation unit; (330) Image difference calculation unit; (340) Matching region extraction unit; (350) Normalization matching region forming unit; (360) Offset value calculating unit; (370) Distance recognizing unit
