Summary:A tracheal tube for a subglottic suctioning system is disclosed. The tracheal tube comprises a flexible cannula having a length, a distal end, and a proximal end, the cannula comprising a plurality of separate lumens including a respiratory lumen, a suction lumen and an inflation lumen; an inflatable cuff surrounding the cannula above the distal end and adapted to seal the trachea of a patient and further having the inflation lumen in fluid communication with the inflatable cuff; a port extending through a side wall of the cannula proximal to the inflatable cuff, the port in fluid communication with the suction lumen; and a valve body located proximal to the cannula. The valve body has a valve on the suction lumen on a proximal end of the body, the valve having a fail-safe position and a closed position, and a check valve that operates independently of the valve on the proximal end of the body, the check valve having an open position and a closed position. Rinsing fluid flows from a source of rinsing fluid to the suction lumen when the check valve is in the open position.
