Summary: | A mordenite of reduced silica : alumina molar ratio is prepared by subjecting a mordenite precursor of silica : alumina molar ratio of at least 12 : 1 to a treatment with a solution of a base and at least one of aluminium and gallium in order to reduce the silica : alumina molar ratio of the mordenite precursor. The mordenite so prepared is useful as a catalyst in the carbonylation of methanol and/or reactive derivatives thereof with carbon monoxide to produce acetic acid and/or methyl acetate. |
