PURPOSE: A stick slip detection device and method are provided to accurately detect the state of a stick slip corresponding to control states by making the detection operation stop based on a control command. CONSTITUTION: A stick slip detection device comprises a displacement detection member, a first operation member(102), a second operation member(103), a characteristic memory unit(104), a state quantity estimated member, a diagnosis operation member, a diagnosis part(100) and a diagnosis operation control part(107). The displacement detection member detects the displacement of an operation part having a contact sliding part. The first operation member produces first state quantity from the displacement. The second operation member produces second state quantity from the displacement. The characteristic memory unit stores the relation of the first and second state quantity from the displacement in the mean rate of the operation part. The state quantity presumes the second state quantity from the first state quantity in order to produce estimation state quantity. The diagnosis operation member determines the abnormal state of the operation part by comparing the second state quantity and estimation state quantity. The diagnostic part determines the abnormality of the operation part.
