Summary:PURPOSE: An engine starting device is provided to couple a pinion of a starter and a ring gear of an engine in a short time when the engine is stopped. CONSTITUTION: An engine starting device comprises an electric motor(5), an output shaft(6), an one-way clutch(18), a pinion(19), a pinion pushing unit(8), a current switching unit(10), an rpm detecting unit, and a controller. The one-way clutch is helical-spline-fitted to the outer surface of the output shaft and supplies torque to the pinion. The pinion pushing unit pushes the pinion toward a ring gear of an engine. When the pinion is pushed, the one-way clutch has smaller idling torque than the ring gear. The current switching unit controls currents supplied to the electric motor. The rpm detecting unit detects the rotational amount of the ring gear.
