Summary:Producing succinic acid by anaerobic fermentation of a carbon source with an Escherichia colistrain comprises a first stage in which carbon dioxide is supplied in an amount dependent on its consumption by the strain and, before total exhaustion of the carbon source, a second step in which the remaining carbon source is fermented without supplying carbon dioxide so as to consume residual carbon dioxide. An independent claim is also included for producing succinic acid by anaerobic fermentation with an Escherichia colistrain in the presence of carbon dioxide while adding a magnesium compound to the fermentation medium to adjust the pH, where the resulting magnesium succinate is then converted to succinic acid.
