Summary:PURPOSE: Data storage device and method are intended to provide a holographic memory system which could be independently activated on single disc and is relatively simple, inexpensive and robust. CONSTITUTION: A data storage device comprises a plastic substrate and micro-holograms. The plastic substrate includes multiple volumes(4510,4520). The volume is arranged along the tracks in multiple layers which are vertically stacked and horizontally extended. The micro-holograms are respectively included in a corresponding one of the volumes. The presence or the absence of the micro-hologram in each volume indicates the corresponding part of the stored data. At least a part of the volumes in a given one of the tracks offered are vertically offset to other volumes of the volumes in the given one of the tracks.
