Summary: | A process by which a substituted methylamine compound useful as an intermediate for the production of agricultural chemicals and medicines is easily produced in satisfactory yield at low cost; and an intermediate for producing the compound. The process comprises: a step in which a hexamethylenetetraammonium salt compound represented by the formula (I) is reacted with a base to obtain one of N-methylidene-substituted methylamine self-addition polymers (II) represented by the formula (II) or a mixture of two or more of these; and a step in which the one of N-methylidene-substituted methylamine self-addition polymers represented by the formula (II) or mixture of two or more of these is hydrolyzed in the presence of an acid. [Chemical formula 1] (I) →(II) → (III) (In the formulae, A represents an organic group which is a hydrocarbon group or a heterocyclic group or the organic group having a substituent; R represents hydrogen, an organic group which is a hydrocarbon group or a heterocyclic group, or the organic group having a substituent; L represents halogeno, etc.; and n is an integer of 2-20.) AA ACID. |
