OPTICAL MULTILAYER FILM, PROCESS FOR PRODUCING CONTINUOUS OPTICAL MULTILAYER FILM, AND LIQUID-CRYSTAL DISPLAY

An optical multilayer film which comprises a polarizer and a retardation film superposed on one side of the polarizer. The polarizer comprises a stretched film made of a hydrophilic polymer containing a dichroic substance, and has an in-plane birefringence at a wavelength of 1,000 nm (nxy[1000]) of...

Summary:An optical multilayer film which comprises a polarizer and a retardation film superposed on one side of the polarizer. The polarizer comprises a stretched film made of a hydrophilic polymer containing a dichroic substance, and has an in-plane birefringence at a wavelength of 1,000 nm (nxy[1000]) of 0.01-0.03. The retardation film is a film having an index ellipsoid satisfying the relationship nx>ny>=nz. The retardation film has been disposed so that the slow-axis direction for the film is substantially perpendicular to the absorption-axis direction for the polarizer. The optical multilayer film, when used in, e.g., a liquid-crystal display, can heighten the contrast ratio of the display.
