Summary:An apparatus and a method for estimating Doppler spread in a wireless communication system are provided to improve performance of a system and to estimate the Doppler spread using a power spectrum of the channel in an OFDM based wireless mobile communication system. An impulse response of a channel is obtained by an IFFT(Inverse Fast Fourier Transform) of a channel value of a frequency domain(903). An effective channel value is sampled by searching for the multi paths from the impulse response(907). A power spectrum of the channel is calculated by an FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) of the effective channel value about the predetermined number of the frame(911). A frequency index with the maximum value is detected from the calculated power spectrum of the channel(913). The maximum Doppler frequency is calculated by obtaining the frequency bin in a position with the maximum value from the calculated power spectrum(923).
