Aqueous polyurethane dispersions are provided to improve the adhesion to hair, to show excellent curl, style retention and high gloss, natural feeling and appearance, and to be used in the manufacture of skin care product, lipstick, mascara and deodorant. A method for manufacturing aqueous polyurethane dispersion suitable for personal care products comprises (i) a step for manufacturing a prepolymer of the chemical formula 1 by reacting (a) at least one polycarbonate polyol, (b) at least one aliphatic or cyclo aliphatic polyisocyanate and (c) optionally at least one low molecular weight diol substituted with an ionic group; (ii) a step for reacting the prepolymer and monohydroxy functional poly alkylene oxide having the number average molecular weight of 3,000 or less; (iii) a step for forming the polyurethanes by extending the prepolymer with (a) a chain extender indicated as the chemical formula 2: [H2N-R4-NH2] and (b) optionally chain extender indicated as the following chemical formula 3: [H2N-R5-NH2], in the presence of the organic solvent; (iv) a step for dispersing the polyurethanes in water; and (v) a step for producing the aqueous polyurethane dispersion by removing the organic solvent.
