A route recovery apparatus in a mobile ad-hoc network and a method thereof are provided to prevent the forwarding of unnecessary local query packets as a mobile node transmits a local query packet containing threshold zone information and information about the neighbor nodes of a transmitting node so that another mobile node, receiving the local query packet, can determine whether to forward the local query packet on the basis of the information contained in the local query packet. A mobile node checks the queue of a network layer and confirms whether a packet has been received(510). If so, the mobile node confirms whether the received packet is a local query packet which contains threshold zone information and information about the neighbor nodes of a transmitting node(520). If so, the mobile node confirms whether the local query packet is a previous received packet(530). If not, the mobile node confirms whether the mobile node is the destination node of the local query packet or a node which knows the route to the destination(540). If not, the mobile node compares its own neighbor nodes with the transmitting node's neighbor nodes and judges whether the mobile node is within the threshold zone(550-570). If not, the mobile node forwards the local query packet(580). However, the mobile node is within the threshold zone, the mobile node discards the local query packet.
