Summary:A thermal head and a method of controlling the same are provided to prevent an excessive temperature rise of the thermal head and tailing phenomenon by forming a dot of the same position with two heating elements in consideration of responsibility of the two heating elements with different lengths. A thermal head(20) includes heating element rows(HL,HS). The heating element rows have a plurality of heating elements(H1~H6) arranged in a main scanning direction. The thermal head heats the heating elements with moving a printing medium in a sub scanning direction and forms a plurality of dot lines in the main scanning direction to print an image, wherein each of the dot lines is a set of a plurality of dots arranged on the printing medium in the sub scanning direction. The heating element rows are arranged in the sub scanning direction. Each of the heating elements of one heating element row has a length of the sub scanning direction, which is different from that of each of the heating elements of the other heating element row. The respective n-th heating elements of the heating elements rows form a dot of the same position in the same dot line together through independent driving of each of the heating element rows.
