An apparatus and a method for transmitting and receiving a signal in a communication system are provided to transmit/receive the signal by a puncturing method and maximize recovery accuracy by reducing the number of variable nodes of a recovery tree which are not punctured. A method for transceiving a signal in a communication system includes the steps of: generating an LDPC(Low Density Parity Check) codeword by coding an information vector by an LDPC coding method; selecting check nodes and variable nodes of the LPDC codeword by using a cost function(513,515); puncturing the variable nodes when the variable nodes are not connected to the reserved check nodes(525); and puncturing the variable nodes through the variable node selection until the variable nodes to be punctured do not exist when all the punctured nodes are recovered through a stopping set check(521,523,525).
