Summary:An initial cell searching method using the characteristics of synchronous codes in a CDMA mobile communication system and an apparatus thereof are provided to maintain the exactness of an estimated synchronous code and timing synchronization and effectively reduce the volume of operations required for initial cell searching by selecting candidate codes using only partial lengths of synchronous codes, not the whole lengths, obtaining the correlations between a received signal and the selected candidate codes using the whole length, and acquiring a synchronous code and timing synchronization. An initial cell searching apparatus using the characteristics of synchronous codes in a CDMA mobile communication system comprises a candidate code selection module(801) and a synchronous code/timing synchronization acquisition module(802). The candidate code selection module comprises a correlation part(803), a storage part(804) and a candidate code index selection part(805). The correlation part executes correlation for a received signal using not the whole lengths of 32 SYNC_DL codes but 32-chip portions. The storage part accumulates the calculated correlation values during a certain subframe. The candidate code index selection part selects some candidate code indexes among the correlation values stored in the storage part.
