Abstract Mutants having high producing ability of 1,2-propanediol are provided to increase production yield of 1,2-propanediol and reduce separation and purification costs by reducing production of by-products based on the glycerolipid metabolism pathway. A mutant having high 1,2-propanediol-producing ability is produced by introducing or amplifying a gene encoding an enzyme for converting glycerol into 2-hydroxypropanal and a gene encoding an enzyme for converting 2-hydroxypropanal into 1,2-propanediol in a microorganism having glycerol-producing ability or being able to use glycerol as a carbon source, which is selected from bacteria, yeasts and fungi, wherein a gene encoding an enzyme for converting 2-hydroxypropanal into glycerol and a gene encoding an enzyme for converting 1,2-propanediol into 2-hydroxypropanal are deleted in the mutant. The 1,2-propanediol is produced by culturing the mutant and isolating 1,2-propanediol from the cultured medium.
