An apparatus and a method for interpolating colors are provided to calculate edge strength around a present pixel, determine an interpolation direction by using the edge strength, and perform color interpolation in the determined interpolation direction, thereby reducing color errors frequently occurring at the boundary. Edge strength at the boundary of a present pixel is calculated by using a difference between color values of the present pixel and the neighboring pixels(410). A horizontal directional difference of color values and a vertical directional difference of color values are calculated using the differences between color values detected from pixels positioned in the same line as that of pixels positioned in the same row as that of the present pixel(420). An interpolation direction of color values which are not detected in the present pixel is determined using the horizontal directional difference of color values and the vertical directional difference of color values(430). The color values which are not detected in the present pixel are interpolated using the neighboring pixels of the present pixels in the interpolation direction(440).
