A switching power supply controller and a method therefor are provided to reduce dissipation of power and to widen an operational voltage range of an input voltage thereof. A switching power supply controller(30) includes a first input terminal and a switch. The first input terminal is configured to receive an operating voltage from an external voltage source of the power supply controller. The switch is configured to receive a first current from a voltage regulator coupled to receive the operating voltage. The switch is configured to decouple the power supply controller from receiving the first current until the operating voltage reaches a first value and to couple the power supply controller to receive the first current after the operating voltage reaches the first value.
