Summary:PURPOSE: To provide an ion transport membrane system which can be used in a gas separator for recovering oxygen from gas containing oxygen or used as an oxidation reactor for oxidizing compounds in supply gas using oxygen permeated into a mixed metal oxide ceramic material of membrane modules. CONSTITUTION: The ion transport membrane system comprises (a) a pressure vessel comprising an inner part, an outer part, an inlet and an outlet; (b) a plural planar ion transport membrane modules which include a metal oxide ceramic material mixed with respective membrane modules and has an inner region and an outer region as a plural planar ion transport membrane modules disposed inside the pressure vessel and arranged in series, wherein an arbitrary inlet and an arbitrary outlet of the pressure vessel are in flow communication with the outer region of the membrane modules; and (c) one or more gas manifolds which are in flow communication with both the inner region of the membrane modules and an outer portion of the pressure vessel, wherein the respective planar ion transport membrane modules include a plural wafers having planar parallel surfaces, and the pressure vessel is cylindrical and has an axis parallel to some or all of the planar parallel surfaces of the wafers, and wherein the ion transport membrane system further comprises a flow containment duct disposed inside the pressure vessel, the flow containment duct surrounds the plural planar ion transport membrane modules, and the flow containment duct is in flow communication with the arbitrary inlet and the arbitrary outlet of the pressure vessel.
