Summary: | PURPOSE: To provide a CVD process for depositing an α-Al2O3 layer at a temperature of 800 deg.C or less, a method for forming an abrasion resistant coating comprising one or more layers substantially consisting of α-Al2O3 deposited by CVD at a temperature of 800 deg.C or less on a rigid tool body, and an alumina coated cutting tool insert, carbide end-mill or solid carbide drill having improved cutting performance against steel. CONSTITUTION: In a cutting tool comprising a body formed of sintered hard metal, cermet, ceramic, high speed steel or superhard materials such as cubic crystalline boron nitride, diamond and the like, and an abrasion resistant rigid coating formed on at least a working portion of the surface of the body, the abrasion resistant rigid coating comprising one or more layers substantially consisting of crystallized α-Al2O3 having thickness of 0.5 to 10 μm, the cutting tool is characterized in that the crystallized α-Al2O3 has columnar grains that have an average particle width of 0.1 to 1.1 μm and are deposited by CVD in a temperature range of 625 to 800 deg.C. |
