PURPOSE: A display having a display area for displaying a plurality of characters in a background is provided to use a display as a cheap and electrically recordable tag for retail sale. CONSTITUTION: A substrate is provided. A firstly-patterned conductive layer(10) is formed on the substrate having an electrically-insulated area defining a characteristic area. A plurality of first contact points(200) are electrically connected with the first-patterned conductor. A light modulation material layer is deposited on the conductive layer. A secondly-patterned conductive layer is deposited on the light modulation material layer to form an electrically-insulated area defining segments of a background and characters. An insulation layer is formed on the second-patterned conductive layer. A third-patterned conductive layer is formed on the insulation layer, defining a plurality of conductors connected with the area defining the character segments in the second-patterned conductor and a background area formed over holes in the insulation layer. A plurality of first and second contact points are electrically addressed so that a display is addressed in matrix type, and is driven in a positive or negative mode.
