Summary:PURPOSE: A method for storing data of a hierarchical data format to a relational DBMS(DataBase Management System) is provided to guarantee data consistency when the hierarchical data format is mapped to the relational DBMS. CONSTITUTION: It is checked that a present combination of descriptor and a locator is stored in a database(11). If the combination is stored, the stored combination is used for a data item(12). If the combination is not stored, it is checked that the descriptor or the locator is stored in the database(13,15). If the descriptor or the locator is stored, the current combination is replaced with a univocal combination(14,16). The data item and the univocal combination are stored. If the descriptor or the locator is not stored, the present combination of the descriptor and the locator is stored with the data item(17).
