Summary:PURPOSE: A master carrier for magnetic transfer and a magnetic transfer method are provided to improve the durability of the master carrier and obtain an excellent transfer signal in a slave medium after magnetic transfer. CONSTITUTION: A master carrier(3) for magnetic transfer includes a base sheet(3a) having an irregularity pattern(31) representing information to be transferred to an in-plane magnetic recording medium and a magnetic layer(3b) formed along the irregularity pattern. The thickness(da1) of the magnetic layer on the upper surface of a protruding portion of the irregularity pattern and the thickness(da2) of the magnetic layer on each of the side surfaces(31s) of the protruding portion satisfy the following condition, 0.05<da2/da1<=1.3. (과 제) 자기패턴을 자기전사한 자기기록매체에 있어서 양호한 재생신호를 얻을 수 있는 자기전사용 마스터 담체를 제공한다. (해결수단) 면내 자기기록매체(2)에 전사해야할 정보에 따른 요철패턴을 갖는 기판(3a)과, 상기 기판(3a)의 적어도 볼록부(31)에 형성된 자성층(3b)을 구비하여 이루어지는 자기전사용 마스터 담체(3)에 있어서, 기판(3a)의 볼록부(31)의 상면의 연자성층 두께(da1)과, 볼록부(31)의 트랙방향 측면의 연자성체 두께(da2)가, 0.05< da2/da1≤1.3의 관계에 있도록 자성층(3b)을 형성한다.
