PURPOSE: An exhaust gas purification system for an internal combustion engine is provided to exactly calculate the total amount of NOx absorbed in a NOx catalyst. CONSTITUTION: An exhaust gas purification system for an internal combustion engine comprises a NOx catalyst(1) for absorbing the NOx in the exhaust gas when the air-fuel ratio of the influent exhaust gas is lean and purifying by reducing the absorbed NOx with a reducing agent in the exhaust gas when the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas turns rich; a unit for calculating the amount of NOx absorbed per unit time in each area of the NOx catalyst when the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas flowing into the NOx catalyst is lean; and a unit for calculating the total amount of NOx absorbed into the NOx catalyst by totaling the amount of NOx calculated by the first calculation unit for the areas of the NOx catalyst. 배기가스 정화장치로서, 유입하는 배기가스의 공연비가 희박한 경우에는 배기가스중의 NOx 를 흡수하며, 또한 배기가스의 공연비가 농후해진 경우에는 흡수된 NOx 를 배기가스중의 환원제로 환원함으로써 정화하는 NOx 촉매; 상기 NOx 촉매에 유입하는 배기가스의 공연비가 희박한 경우에 NOx 촉매의 각각의 영역에서의 단위시간당 흡수된 NOx 의 양을 산출하기 위한 제 1 유닛; 및 NOx 촉매의 영역에 대해 상기 제 1 계산유닛에 의해 산출된 NOx 의 양을 합산함으로써 NOx 촉매에 흡수된 NOx 의 총량을 산출하기 위한 제 2 유닛을 포함하는 배기가스 정화장치.
