Summary: | PURPOSE: A method for racemizing an optical active vinyl-substituted cyclopropanecarboxylic acid compound is provided, to allow the compound to be racemized effectively by the industrially applicable process. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the step of reacting an optical active vinyl-substituted cyclopropanecarboxylic acid compound of the formula 1, a nitric acid compound and nitrogen oxide, wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 are independently H, a halogen atom, a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group of C1-C4, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group or a substituted or unsubstituted alkoxycarbonyl group; R1 and R2 form a substituted or unsubstituted alkylene group together; and X is OH, a halogen atom, a substituted or unsubstituted alkoxy group of C1-C20 or a substituted or unsubstituted aryloxy group. Preferably the nitric acid compound is nitric acid or a mixture of nitric acid and nitrates; and the nitrogen oxide is nitrous oxide (N2O).
