Summary:PURPOSE: A method for supporting rescue channels in a communication system is provided to support the use of pre-allocated radio resources at neighboring BSs(Base Stations) in order to attempt to recover a voice call in danger of being dropped. CONSTITUTION: An MS(Mobile Station)(114) disables its transmitter when detecting the loss of forward frames from a network. Once a source BS(102) detects the loss of transmission from the MS(114), the source BS(102) re-establishes communication with the MS(114) by performing a soft handoff with respect to rescue cells at neighboring BSs. The neighboring BSs having the last reported EPSMM(Extended Pilot Strength Measurement Message) are registered in the MS's neighbor list.
